My Story

Since 2010 and beyond, I have experienced devasting losses within my family. I was so very fortunate to have had a wonderful and loving relationship with my immediate family. My loss has actually made me reflect on the social connections we have in our lives and how important they are. This has spurred my interest, research, advocacy, campaigning and education to support people to find a sense of belonging and feel connected within their communities.

My vision is to raise awareness of the devastating consequences of loneliness and social isolation. My aim is to provide a platform in which to start those all important conversations and facilitate more compassionate, empathetic and better connected communities.

At the very heart of all that I do is people, and I pride myself on advocating and supporting people and organisations to be better connected, promoting a sense of belonging within our communities.

Why your pledge matters

Loneliness and social isolation is a public health issue. It has comparable health outcomes to smoking 15 cigarettes a day and obesity. This impacts various systems within our bodies and mortality. The serious impacts on health and wellbeing, has resulted in the World Health Organisation launching a new commission in November 2023, to address this serious public health concern. See the infographic opposite for further details.

"Nice pace and engaging with time for conversation and reflection"

“A general reminder about the significance of loneliness and social isolation in relation to health and how much of an impact it has on individuals and society.”

“It raised an issue that we might not necessarily think about. We tend to deal a lot with the result i.e. declining mental health but perhaps not so much on the cause of which loneliness is one.“

“I particularly liked that it made you think of circumstances when someone might be having feelings of loneliness, and that they might not recognise it as such.”

“It was really interesting, and thought provoking, thank you.”
